Operating Cash Flow (OCF) Ratio Solvency Auditor Formula Breakdown

Operating Cash Flow Ratio = Cash Flow from Operations (CFO) / Total Current Liabilities
Operating Cash Flow (CFO)

Actual cold cash generated from core customer business operations after working capital changes.

Current Liabilities

All short-term debt obligations, accounts payable, and accrued expenses due within one year.

Net Operating Cash Surplus

Excess operating cash buffer remaining after satisfying all current liabilities: CFO minus Current Liabilities.

Months Covered

Number of months of current short-term liabilities covered by annual operating cash inflows.

How to Calculate Operating Cash Flow Ratio Step-by-Step

1

Extract trailing twelve-month Operating Cash Flow (CFO) from the audited Cash Flow Statement.

2

Extract Total Current Liabilities from the latest balance sheet.

3

Divide CFO by Current Liabilities to produce the Operating Cash Flow Ratio.

4

Calculate net cash surplus/deficit and determine months of current obligations covered.

5

Assign liquidity status: Fortress (> 1.5x), Healthy (1.0x - 1.49x), or High Refinancing Risk (< 0.5x).

How to Interpret the Result

Unlike the Current Ratio (which includes illiquid inventory and unpaid receivables), the OCF ratio only evaluates cold cash collected from operations. A ratio of 1.0x or higher proves the company can pay off all short-term bills using operational cash flow alone.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is the OCF Ratio superior to the Current Ratio?

Current Ratio includes inventory (which may be hard to sell during downturns) and accounts receivable (which customers might delay paying). The OCF Ratio tests pure cash generated from business operations.

What is a healthy Operating Cash Flow Ratio?

A ratio of 1.0x to 1.5x represents strong operational liquidity. A ratio below 0.5x indicates that the company must borrow money, issue equity, or sell assets to settle upcoming debts.

Can a profitable company have a low OCF ratio?

Yes! If a company reports strong accounting net income but customers take 120 days to pay, CFO will lag behind current liabilities, creating severe short-term liquidity bottlenecks.
